ONS FIGURES SHOW GOVERNMENT HAS CUT PENSIONER WINTER FUEL PAYMENTS BY £600 MILLION THIS YEAR
Dr Ros Altmann, Director-General of Saga, comments, "Following recent calls for cuts in pensioner benefits, it is important to note that the Government has actually cut spending on pensioner Winter Fuel Payments by over £600million this year. The ONS figures show that after spending £2.8bn last year, the expenditure on pensioner Winter Fuel Payments fell to just £2.1bn this year, despite the record high level of energy prices."
"Winter Fuel Payments are an essential lifeline for many pensioners during the cold winter months and are a supplement to the very low Basic State Pension. Unless the State Pension is properly reformed, cutting these payments further could cause real hardship."
