PRINCESS ANNE VISITS SAGAS NEW VOLUNTEER TOURISM PROJECT IN ZAMBIATuesday 9 October 2012
Princess Anne visits Saga’s new Volunteer Tourism Project in Zambia
Saga Holidays recently launched a new volunteer tourism project in Mukuni, Zambia in the same week that Her Royal Highness Princess Anne visited Mukuni Village. The chiefdom of approximately 100 villages is just ten kilometres from Victoria Falls which draws tourists from all over the world, most of whom are unaware of the poverty around the corner.
Mukuni Village has been supported by the Saga Charitable Trust for over five years, and has received funds for a malaria prevention programme, medical equipment, water towers & bore holes, shelters for school children and educational workshops. The launch of Saga’s new Volunteer Travel Programme in Zambia extends this work by carefully selecting volunteers who have the necessary skills to make a real difference for the people of Mukuni and the surrounding areas.
Volunteers will spend four weeks working with villagers on community based assignments, either at the village school or a rural clinic. This could be working on an education programme, helping teachers with classes in key subjects and music, drama or sports. Volunteers may assist with a health care programme to provide general medical advice or to help prevent Malaria and HIV.
The first departure is 23 January 2013, when a maximum of four volunteers will fly out to the Protea Hotel in Livingstone to begin their volunteer programme. The price for four weeks starts from £3799, including international flights, accommodation and meals, the support of project management team and a project donation. Saga’s Volunteer Travel division operates as a not-for-profit part of the Saga Group, and any profit made from volunteer tourism is passed on to the Saga Charitable Trust.
The Mukuni Project is the latest of Saga’s eight volunteer tourism projects throughout the world. Other programmes support community projects, schools and health centres in St Lucia, South Africa, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
