Discover Dr Livingstone’s Africa

Calling all adventurers!

March 19, 2013 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of David Livingstone. The writer, missionary, medic and anti-slavery campaigner is perhaps best known as one of the greatest explorers of Africa.

For 30 years, Dr Livingstone travelled more than 46,000kms and was the first European to make the daunting trans-continental journey across southern Africa. His expeditions crossed the Kalahari and he trekked through dense jungle to explore the great lakes and rivers of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Malawi.

When Dr Livingstone saw 'the Smoke that Thunders' waterfall on the Zambezi River, he wrote:
“It had never been seen before by European eyes; but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight." He named the natural phenomenon Victoria Falls in honour of his Queen.

During the Zambezi Expedition, Livingstone discovered Lake Malawi and described it as “The Lake of Stars” reflecting the light from fishermen's lanterns. It is now a paradise for snorkellers who can swim with the freshwater tropical fish and see incredible wildlife.
