Author Jonathan Coe looking for new material on Saga cruise!

Watch out passengers on Saga Pearl II’s Maritime Cities of the Baltic cruise this summer!

Top author Jonathan Coe will not only be on board as part of Saga and Penguin Books’ Meet-the-Author series, but he will be looking for new material.

Jonathan, 52, said: “The trouble with being a full-time author is that you are either at your desk or at literary events.
“I did not think I would go on a cruise until later in life but Saga tempted me; at the back of my mind was the thought that it might give me an idea for a new book.

“I am looking forward to meeting passengers and I want to keep my talks relaxed and informal.

“I have a very romantic view of the world of cruises, formed by watching films like Death on the Nile when I was younger.

“They seem full of the potential for glamour, romance and intrigue. I hope I’m not going to be disappointed!”

Jonathan is the author of 10 novels, including What a Carve Up!, The House of Sleep and The Rain Before it Falls. His novel The Rotters’ Club, on which he drew on his experiences growing up in 1970s Birmingham, was adapted as a BBC television drama series.

Jonathan will be giving readings from his books and taking part in discussion groups on the 400-passenger Saga Pearl II which boasts a spacious library with 3,400 books.

There will also be Q & A session with one of the UK’s most respected literary critics, Peter Kemp, who will interviewing Jonathan about his work.

So, will Jonathan be revealing details of his latest book on Saga Pearl II? The father-of-two said: I’m working on a new novel, and a stage comedy about the last days of my literary hero Henry Fielding.

“The book will be my 11th and imaginatively called Number 11.

“I am not supposed to say much about it but I am terrible once someone gets me talking - I am bound to start telling passengers!”

The Maritime Cities of the Baltic 14-night cruise sails from Dover on August 22. Ports of call include Stockholm, Helsinki, two days in St Petersburg, Tallin, Copenhagen, Wismar and Amsterdam.

Price from £2159 includes VIP door-to-door service, all meals and entertainment, afternoon tea, 24-hour room service, welcome cocktail party,  free wifi (subject to availability), all gratuities, porterage, shuttle bus to all town centres from the port of call and travel insurance and cancellation cover.
