Garden lovers can stroll through the private Kenrokuen garden, developed between the 17th and 19th centuries by the Maeda Clan. Kenrokuen, meaning ‘Garden of the Six Sublimities’, reflects the six qualities that make up a perfect Eastern garden; space, seclusion, antiquity, artificiality, water and views.
The pace changes by boarding the Thunderbird train to Japan’s cultural heart – Kyoto. Take a sightseeing tour of temples, castles and watch a kimono show as well visiting a traditional tea house served by geishas.
An optional excursion to Hiroshima by express train takes visitors to the city which was virtually destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945.
