All aboard the American Queen from New Orleans to Memphis
Take it slow on Ol’ Man River cruise
Step aboard the elegant American Queen paddlewheel steamboat and slip into the slow pace of the life on the Mississippi on a cruise to Memphis.
Saga’s new Soul of the Mississippi 12-night escorted cruise and tour includes a seven-night cruise, four nights in a hotel and one night in flight. Spend two nights New Orleans to set tone for this journey through the Old South, which begins with a tour of the ‘Big Easy’.
Once on board the luxurious American Queen, guests will be enchanted by her grace and grandeur. The steamboat has all the opulence of the American Victorian era with glistening woodwork, traditional décor and antiques, combined with modern luxury facilities and fine dining.
Guests can relax on the Front Porch to soak up the atmosphere of Ol’ Man River as the American Queen paddles leisurely along her way. Further treats include a five-course dinner in the JM White Dining Room and a Broadway-style show in the two-deck Grand Saloon.
When the ‘beautiful lady’ arrives in ports of call there will be dedicated hop on and off coaches for sightseeing. Admire the charming buildings in St Francisville, from Victorian houses built by Jewish immigrants to the eye-catching plantation homes, and travel past the antebellum mansion in Natchez, a town which thrived in the years before the American Civil War and many of its beautiful Greek revival buildings hark back to those times.
See the old plantation of Oak Alley, named because branches on rows of 300-year-old oak trees form an avenue of foliage. The Biedenham Coca-Cola Museum in Vicksburg also awaits.
When guests reach Memphis, the birthplace of rock’n’roll, do not miss Elvis’s gloriously kitsch Graceland and call in to Sun Studio to experience the atmosphere of the early 1950s music scene.
12 nights from £3099, fly from Heathrow seven nights on American Queen, four nights in a hotel, one in flight. Price includes VIP door-to-door chauffeur service, return flights, airport taxes, accommodation, most meals, wine and beer with lunch and dinner on board ship, porterage, tour manager, travel insurance and cancellation cover.
