Two new river cruises to Germanys magical Christmas markets from £299
Soak up the magical atmosphere of Germany’s traditional festive markets on Saga’s new three-night river cruise from £299 or four-night full-board option from £499. Travel by coach from Folkestone to Germany via Eurotunnel and embark Regina Rheni II, which has been exclusively reserved for Saga passengers.
Best of the Festive Markets – Düsseldorf and Cologne, departs December 13, 2015
Get into the festive spirit at an evening cocktail party before the two big shopping days ahead. Düsseldorf and Cologne each have seven themed markets and after breakfast the Saga cruise director will take guests on an orientation walk to highlight the main sights and Christmas markets.
In Düsseldorf guests can explore the Marktplatz where craftsmen demonstrate their skills in glass-blowing and wood carving; the Little Angel Market which takes its inspiration from the art nouveau music pavilion; Flinger Strasse where the stalls resemble the city's old town houses; Little Star Market in the Wilhelm-Marx-Haus courtyard and Schadowplatz, home to a Scandinavian-style village.
Regina Rheni II will sail on to Cologne where the next seven markets await. Guests can follow the aromas of cinnamon cookies, baked apples, roast chestnuts and spiced mulled wine to the market by Cologne Cathedral. Discover St Nick's Village market on Rudolfplatz and the twinkling lights of the Angel Market on Neumarkt; the Harbour Christmas Market with its maritime atmosphere and nearby Chocolate Museum which has a riverside café and shop crammed with sweet treats.
This breakfast-only cruise allows passengers more flexibility to explore and try local food specialities but if guests prefer to eat on board they can pay separately for buffet dinners in Regina Rheni II's restaurant.
Three nights from £299 with single cabins at no extra cost subject to availability. Price includes UK travel service, coach travel from Folkestone to Germany via Eurotunnel (or Eurostar at an extra cost), welcome cocktail party, all on-board gratuities, porterage and optional travel insurance and additional cancellation rights, or a discount of £11 if passenger has own insurance.
Rhineland Festive Markets – Cologne, Bonn and Koblenz, departs December 16, 2015
This four-night full-board river cruise on Regina Rheni II includes a welcome cocktail party, plus wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner. There will be a full day’s shopping in Cologne before the comfortable 154-passenger river cruiser sails along the Rhine to Bonn, the former capital of West Germany.
In Bonn, guests can marvel at the twinkling lights and decorated facades of the buildings on Münsterplatz where the Christmas market comes alive with music and fairground rides. Even the town hall becomes a giant advent calendar with lit windows marking the days to Christmas.
In Koblenz, guests can head to the romantic Old Town where, among the historic buildings, dozens of pretty wooden stalls display everything from handmade toys and tree decorations to roasted chestnuts and glühwein.
Four nights from £499 with single cabins at no extra cost, subject to availability. Price includes UK travel service, coach travel from Folkestone to Germany via Eurotunnel (or Eurostar at an extra cost), full-board with wine and soft drinks served with lunch and dinner, welcome cocktail party, all on-board gratuities, porterage and optional travel insurance and additional cancellation rights, or a discount of £11 if passenger has own insurance.
