Discover the Douro Valley on a cruise fit for a queen

Her Majesty the Queen sailed along the River Thames on the Spirit of Chartwell during the 2012 Diamond Jubilee river pageant and Saga guests will be able to enjoy river cruising on this special ‘royal barge’ next summer.

The charming 15-cabin vessel, in distinctive umber brown and cream livery in the style of a 1920s Pullman train, has been refurbished and furnished with antiques.

It has a classic elegance and cabins are outside facing so guests can expect unforgettable views as Spirit of Chartwell sails through the magnificent Douro Valley which is quilted with lush greenery and terraced vineyards.

The all-inclusive ‘Heritage of the Douro Valley’ river cruise will be combined with a stay in a converted 12th-century monastery. From Oporto, Spirit of Chartwell will sail to Régua, a small town surrounded by rolling hills, for a trip to magnificent Mateus Palace and Gardens, which is pictured on the label of the distinctive rosé wine bottle.

There will also be a visit to Lamego, a city that is home to the hilltop sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remedios. The cruise would not be complete without a visit to one of Oporto’s famous port wine cellars and there will be time to pick up a bottle or two to take home.

After the cruise guests will transfer to the historic city of Guimarães to stay at Pousada de Guimarães Santa Marinha (4Q), a converted 12th-century monastery. Passengers will have plenty of leisure time to explore and take an excursion to Braga, a city with a history that spans thousands of years.

Quinta da Aveleda, a beautiful wine-growing estate, will also be on the itinerary and guests will be able to stroll in the landscaped grounds before enjoying a tasting of cheese and wine produced on the estate.
