Future pill
Researchers from University of California San Francisco have discovered that very low doses of the drug lenalidomide helps to stimulate immune-cell protein production – it’s this production which decreases during ageing. Without an effective immune system a person’s health is compromised – the immune system is unable to respond as quickly or efficiently, making illnesses more likely and more dangerous.
Lenalidomide, a derivative of thalidomide, was originally developed as a treatment for multiple myeloma and has since been used to treat inflammatory disorders and other cancers with some success. It works by helping to reset the balance of specific cytokines – proteins that aid signalling between cells – which can either fight viruses and bacteria, or if unbalanced, cause inflammation, which in turn leads to a decline in overall health. "If, at age 50, your cytokine levels are the same as they were at 25, you'll probably stay healthy as you age," says Dr Edward J. Goetzl, lead study author. "But if they're heading downhill, we need to do something about it."
To boost your immunity, add these foods to your diet:
- Yogurt Not just any old pot will do, though. Look for one containing Lactobacillus reuteri, which has been found to stimulate white blood cell production.
- Oats Promote healthy digestion and contain antimicrobials and antioxidants too.
- Garlic Packs its punch with allicin, which fights bacteria and infection.
- Chicken soup Soothes the soul and blocks the migration of inflammatory white cells.
- Tea Contains an immune-boosting amino acid, L-theanine.
