Brisk beach walk
According to researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia, the symptoms of osteoarthritis can be reduced through a simple exercise regime and glucosamine sulphate supplements.
Often called 'wear and tear' arthritis because your risk of getting it increases with age, and because it can occur as the result of injury and/or being overweight. It affects more women than men. It is the most common form of arthritis in the UK, so this new research could affect millions of people.
The researchers gave patients a supplement of glucosamine for 18 weeks, and encouraged them to walk three or five days a week (two sessions of 1500 steps on each of the days). They found that the five-day group walked approximately the same amount as the three-day group, and that all of them showed significant improvements in their symptoms such as stiffness or pain in the joint.
