Get £120 discount off your next energy bill

By Paul Lewis , Thursday 13 October 2011

Alphabet W With household energy bills set to rise by more than a fifth this winter we could all do with some help. So a new Warm Home Discount of £120 will be welcome news for those entitled.
PiggybankPiggybank

The core group

More than 600,000 pensioners will get the £120 discount off their winter electricity bill without claiming. They are single pensioners who get the guarantee part of pension credit and only get that part. That means their income will be around £103 a week or about £164 a week for couples. If their income is higher and they get savings credit as well then they will not qualify. The discount should be paid automatically, the qualifying date was September 11 and they will get a letter from the DWP confirming their entitlement in November.

The broader group

Some people who do not qualify for an automatic payment may still get the £120 discount. To qualify they must fulfil several conditions. They must get income support or the means-tested version of jobseeker's allowance or employment and support allowance. They must also have a child under five OR get a disability premium with their means-tested benefit. In addition, pensioners who get the guarantee part of pension credit but don't get an automatic payment because they also get savings credit are in this broader group. Just to confuse things further, energy companies can have their own rules which may be more generous.

People in the broader group will not get the discount automatically they must apply. And because there is a limited amount of money available the sooner they apply the better their chance of getting it.

Each energy supplier has its own procedures. Look on your latest bill and ring customer support. Don't take no for an answer - if you qualify insist you go on the list. British Gas has promised that anyone eligible who registers before the end of January 2012 will get the discount. Other firms admit it will be first come first served.

People already getting a reduced tariff because of their circumstances will not be moved to Warm Home Discount this year unless they ask. They may be worse off if they do.

Other rules

There are two other conditions that all groups must fulfil. The person who qualifies - or their partner - must be the named person on the electricity bill. And they must buy their electricity from one of the big six energy suppliers or one of two smaller ones, Ebico or Utility Warehouse. Other small firms are not in the scheme.

People with a prepayment meter are not excluded. They will be sent a cheque or payable order. The discount is only off an electricity bill because all households have electricity.

The companies will claw back these rebates by passing it onto those of us who dont qualify for the rebate. My electricity bill last year was 40.00 - it has now gone up to 86.00. For the first time in my life I am in arrears to water of 300.00 and gas and electricity 400.00. I am living in dire circumstances and now cannot after all, get my pension at 60 but have to continue working until 67, despite paying Ni and Tax for over 35 years. I am told I continually "slip through the net"

I am female,54, in March. Although I worked full time all my life and did not have children I am now on incapacity benefit due to a myriad of health conditions. Cold exacerbates many of them. Twice I have had hypothermia. Live in a cold area of Norfolk in a cold house. My only income is incapacity benefit at 90 per week. As I get no other benefits I do not qualify for cold weather payments for the new £120 rebate.

This is what I expected. I get some guarantee pension credit but also about £6 a week savings credit. Although my total income is only £146 per week I do not qualify. In addition, I switched from Eon to EDF a couple of months ago because Eon wanted to raise my monthly from £65 to £83 pm. EDF offered a deal that would leave me on the £65 for a year. I have now found, on my account site a notification that my payment goes up from Dec to £88pm. Thank you PM. Another one deep in fuel poverty.

Until May of this year I have always had a bath each evening. This summer I have had a shower each morning instead. My latest gas account has been only 33% of last years for the same period--from July to October. Now that's a saving!

I am 60 but do not get the state pension until May next year I believe. I have a small private pension to live on plus my savings. I am unemployed. Do I qualify for the special heating payment? Many thanks, vivienne.
