Four perfect holiday spots in the Canary Islands

By Michael Manton, Wednesday 22 May 2013

They may be a little further away than most of Europe's holiday hotspots, but the Canary Islands pretty much guarantee year-round sunshine.
Whether you want to get away from it all in a rural retreat, be a short stroll from the beach, locate yourself in the heart of a resort's hustle and bustle, or enjoy the wealth of facilities the Canary Islands have to offer, a villa holiday gives you the freedom to explore and relax as the mood take you.

1. Lanzarote

Baked in perennial sunshine, Lanzarote is a popular choice with holidaymakers for its spacious sandy beaches, great variety of restaurants and wealth of leisure facilities. By day, visit the island's beautiful and dramatic lava fields and volcanic craters – then enjoy warm evenings dining al fresco or relaxing over a leisurely drink.

Where to stay? A pretty, bustling resort with a sandy beach and popular promenade, Playa Blanca is the most southerly resort on Lanzarote and is only 15 kilometres from the Timanfaya National Park.

Attractive and stylishly designed, Villa Emilia (sleeps 4) is located in a great position within the Parque del Rey villa community, just 15 minutes walk from the resort's bustling centre and harbour.

2. Tenerife

Known as the sub-tropical Canary Island, Tenerife is a lively, fun and welcoming destination which will entertain you with a mix of colourful fiestas, modern bars and fantastic restaurants. From the lush rainforests of the north and sun-baked south, to the mountain range in the middle – you'll find Tenerife teeming with tourist treasures.

Where to stay? Villa Casa Sol (sleeps six) is a comfortably furnished, three-bedroom villa in the resort of Callao Salvaje, which is a short drive from the bright lights of Playa de las Americas, offering the ideal base for those wanting to be near to Tenerife's main town.

3. Fuerteventura

's stunning stretch of coastline and laidback tempo remains one of the Canary Islands' best kept secrets. Warm Saharan winds whip up the seas to create a haven for watersports enthusiasts and miles of shimmering sand dunes line the shotes. Inland, the island is home to whitewashed houses, tiny churches and ancient windmills.

Where to stay? Villa El Descanso (sleeps six) is situated in a prime location of Caleta de Fuste,  within easy reach of a  shopping centre and the prestigious 18-hole championship golf course.

Caleta de Fuste is built around an 18th-century fortified tower and pleasure harbour, and has a beautiful golden beach with calm, clear, sheltered waters.

4. Gran Canaria

Perhaps the prettiest of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria offers the best of both worlds, with a wealth of natural beauty and all the exciting attractions of city life in the capital, Las Palmas. The capital’s old quartre dates back to the 15th century and encompassses the Vegueta and Triana districts, and wherever you go you can enjoy the glorious subtropical climate, perfect for growing exotic palms and fruits.

Where to stay? Surrounded by mountainous scenery, the popular residential development of Tauro offers the ideal place to sunbathe and swim in your own villa pool.

Villa Margarita (sleeps six) is within a short walk of a local minimarket and restaurant, while the popular sandy beach of Amadores is only a few minutes drive away providing you with a selection of amenities.
