The majority of us could no longer imagine life without our smartphones. We rely on them not only for keeping in contact with friends and family, but for taking photos, paying bills, organising our diaries and so much more.

They’re an essential, there’s no denying it. So if yours were to be lost, stolen or broken, it would be far from ideal. Especially given that the average price of a mobile phone – and therefore the cost of replacing it – is on the rise.

That’s why it’s important to check whether your mobile phone is covered by your home insurance.

Are mobile phones covered by home insurance?

Most contents insurance policies will cover your mobile phone whilst it’s at your property. You’ll usually be covered for loss or damage in the event of a fire, storm or flood, and you’ll be covered against theft too.

Saga Home Insurance covers your mobile phone when it’s in your home. The single item limit is £2,500, so this should easily cover the cost of your mobile, even if you have the latest model.

Are mobile phones covered for accidental damage?

This depends on your policy. With Saga Plus home insurance, accidental damage is included. So if you smash your mobile phone on the floor, drop it in the toilet or sit on it and crack the screen, you’re covered.

Accidental damage is an optional extra for Saga Select home insurance policyholders, so consider adding it on to ensure you’re protected against unexpected mishaps.

Are mobiles covered when you’re out and about?

This depends on your policy too. To be covered when you’re out and about with your mobile phone, your home insurance policy needs to include personal belongings cover. This is included with Saga Plus, and it’s an optional add-on with Saga Select.

Since the likelihood of theft or damaging your mobile phone when you’re away from home is high, it’s a good idea to add personal belongings cover to your home insurance policy. Saga personal belongings insurance covers you up to the value of £2,500 per mobile phone (max £10,000 per claim) and protects you anywhere in the world. If you need more than £2,500 cover for your mobile phone you can add it to your policy as a specified item.

How to make sure your mobile is covered on your home insurance

How to protect your phone

Although accidents happen and theft, loss and damage can be unavoidable, there are some steps you can take to protect your phone:

Use a screen protector to prevent the screen from getting scratched, cracked or shattered.
Use a protective case to prevent damage if you drop your phone (better yet, make it a waterproof case).
Avoid putting it in your back pocket in case you forget and sit down on it.
Add a phone grip to the back of your device to decrease the chances of dropping it.

Don’t leave it unattended – in case a child, pet or thief gets their hands on it.
Install Find My iPhone or Google’s Find My Device to help track down your phone if it’s lost or stolen.
Set up biometric security to make it harder for anyone else to access your phone’s content.
Backup your phone so you don’t lose your photos and data if the worst does happen.
