How secure is your car?

Apart from your home, your car is probably one of the biggest financial purchases that you’ll make in your lifetime. So it makes sense, to do all you can, to deter thieves from leaving you with nothing more than an empty space where your car was once parked.

Today, there are numerous security systems available to motorists. Some more technically advanced than others. But it’s becoming increasingly important to have one fitted. You’ll also discover that your car insurance premium will come down in price. And in some extreme cases, unless you’ve an immobiliser or alarm fitted to your car, you may not even be able to obtain car insurance at all.

But whilst investing in a high tech security system can seriously put car thieves off and save money on your motor insurance, it will not, in all instances, guarantee that your vehicle still won’t disappear from where you last left it.

However, there are some basic, fundamental things you can do that will reduce the chances of your car being stolen. And they won’t cost you a penny, which, in these lean times, is always a bonus.

Parking

It’s blindingly obvious really. Your car is more at risk of theft if you leave it on the road. In fact, vehicles left on the street are 40 times more likely to be tampered with. Obviously, the best solution is to leave your car in a locked, secure garage, if you have one. It’s far safer. Alternatively, if you have a driveway, use it. Added deterrents here can be security lighting and gravelled surfaces – they make a lot of noise. In both instances, you’ll pay less for your car insurance.

Keys

Today, as car security systems are becoming more and more complex, thieves are turning to stealing keys, then letting themselves into the car and simply driving off. When you’re out and about ensure your keys are actually concealed. Don’t leave them exposed. It’s all too easy to leave them on a counter top or in an open handbag.

One form of car theft that is becoming alarmingly commonplace is thieves actually stealing car keys from houses. Always make sure that you leave your keys out of sight. Put them in a cupboard or a draw.

Petrol Stations

As unlikely as it may sound, some motorists have literally had their cars stolen from right under their noses, when paying for their petrol. Most petrol stations today have CCTV but thieves have been known to park a stolen van in front of cameras to obscure the view. So, never leave your keys in the ignition.

Other ways to stop your car being stolen

It’s also reassuring to know that new products and schemes are being introduced to help in the fight against car crime. You can now invest in enhanced protective glazing for your car, to combat smash and grab instances occurring. Also, an increasing number of safe parking schemes are being set up, across the UK. And you can even buy theft resistant number plates for your car, which helps reduce car identity theft.

Finally, here’s something to think about. Whilst overall theft rates have fallen, the percentage of cars stolen but not recovered is increasing. Cars stolen by professional car thieves, to sell on, or for parts, are extremely unlikely to be found. Latest figures suggest that over 50% of cars stolen are never recovered.

So remember, lock it or lose it.
