New York serves up one iconic sight after another, but here are just a few of the ones you mustn’t miss.
It was the world’s tallest building when it opened in 1931. Even now, having been overtaken by taller, shinier buildings, the Empire State Building is still one of the standouts on the NYC skyline. The 360o view from the top is just as impressive, especially at dusk as the sun goes down and the lights go up in one of North America’s most illustrious cities.
It’s one of the most famous green spaces on the planet, and it’s huge. Central Park is 843 acres of rolling meadows, manicured gardens, elm-lined pathways, lakes and even a small zoo, all slap bang in the middle of Manhattan. Walkers, joggers, cyclists, skaters, even cross-country skiers in wintertime - everyone in New York makes the city’s biggest, greenest playground their own.
It’s an American icon. The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island at the gateway to New York Harbour and is a world symbol for freedom and hope. You’ll need to catch a ferry over from Lower Manhattan (which itself is a nice trip). There’s a great view of the city when you climb the 215 steps onto the pedestal or - if you’re feeling fit - buy a ticket and brave the 354 stairs up and down a narrow staircase to reach the crown.
