Holidays and tours to New York

Skyscrapers and yellow taxi cabs

New York feels familiar, even the first time you visit. The wide streets. The honking yellow cabs. The iconic skyline. Leafy Central Park. When you choose New York for your holiday, you feel like you’ve walked onto the set of a thousand famous movies: Taxi Driver, When Harry Met Sally and Saturday Night Fever, to name just a few.

Saga’s range of holidays to New York include city breaks in the heart of Manhattan, multi-centre holidays combining New York with two other big-hitting USA cities - New Orleans and San Francisco, and a Cruise & Stay pairing a break in the Big Apple with a Caribbean cruise. So whether you want to dedicate your entire holiday to exploring the world-class shops, art galleries, museums and architecture that make NYC one of the most exciting and exhilarating cities on the planet, or just take a bite of the Big Apple your way through, you’re in for a treat.

New York serves up one iconic sight after another, but here are just a few of the ones you mustn’t miss.

It was the world’s tallest building when it opened in 1931. Even now, having been overtaken by taller, shinier buildings, the Empire State Building is still one of the standouts on the NYC skyline. The 360o view from the top is just as impressive, especially at dusk as the sun goes down and the lights go up in one of North America’s most illustrious cities.

It’s one of the most famous green spaces on the planet, and it’s huge. Central Park is 843 acres of rolling meadows, manicured gardens, elm-lined pathways, lakes and even a small zoo, all slap bang in the middle of Manhattan. Walkers, joggers, cyclists, skaters, even cross-country skiers in wintertime - everyone in New York makes the city’s biggest, greenest playground their own.

It’s an American icon. The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island at the gateway to New York Harbour and is a world symbol for freedom and hope. You’ll need to catch a ferry over from Lower Manhattan (which itself is a nice trip). There’s a great view of the city when you climb the 215 steps onto the pedestal or - if you’re feeling fit - buy a ticket and brave the 354 stairs up and down a narrow staircase to reach the crown.

No, Manhattan is one of five boroughs that make up New York City. It’s probably the most famous though, and it’s where you’ll find most of the city’s landmark sights.

Confusingly, it’s both. New York State is the 27th largest state in the USA and New York City is the largest city in New York State.

Yes, tipping is standard practice in New York City. It’s usual to tip bartenders, waiters, hotel staff and taxi drivers when you’re out and about.

It takes about eight hours to fly direct from London to New York.

New York is five hours behind the UK, four hours behind during British Summertime.

No, you will only need a New York ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) for your holiday in New York, which you can apply for online. You only need a visa if you are staying for more than 90 days. We do recommend you check visa requirements before you travel, however, as things can change. There is a useful tool to do this at CIBT visas or you can visit GOV UK.
