OVER 50s CAR INSURANCE

Your needs and experience are catered for with over 50s car insurance from Saga.

Over 50s car insurance designed for experienced drivers

When you have years of safe driving experience under your belt, you know what you’re looking for when it comes to car insurance. Our car insurance policies cater to most needs.

Saga’s over 50s car insurance is designed to offer the right levels of cover for you and your car, with the full range of benefits you’d expect.

Is car insurance for over 50s cheaper?

Over 50s are considered one of the safest groups of drivers on the road.

In 2022, Department for Transport statistics highlighted that car drivers aged 50-59 were involved in just 12% of reported road accidents in the UK. So, when it comes to car insurance for drivers over 50, UK insurers can offer premiums based on statistical evidence.

However, ensuring you have the right cover is more important than getting cheap car insurance. Even though targeted over 50s car insurance may not always be the most affordable option, the benefits can mean these policies are worth considering.

Remember, it’s always worth checking policy details to make sure you’re getting the best over 50s car insurance for you.

Does my age help my car insurance price go down?

When you turn 50, it’s possible that your car insurance price can start to decrease, especially if you have several years of safe experience on the road. If you’ve not made any claims during your years of driving, it can result in cheaper policies.

However, a strong claims history doesn’t necessarily guarantee lower insurance premiums. Other factors such as car modifications, mileage and location can impact costs.

Drivers over 50 generally are considered a sound group to insure as they are likely to:

  • Take fewer risks.
  • Stay within speed limits.
  • Drive fewer miles.
  • Are more experienced drivers.
  • Have a good claims history.
  • Have several years of no-claims discount.

What are the benefits of over 50s car insurance?

Buying over 50s car insurance from a specialist provider like Saga offers added benefits.

Age and driving experience help keep premium costs affordable, and specific benefits can include:

  • No upper age limit, so you can get insured whatever your age.
  • Emergency any-driver cover, so any driver can take the wheel if you have a medical emergency while driving (Saga Plus and Saga Select).
  • Driving abroad, so you’re covered in most European countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain (some restrictions apply). Saga Plus includes cover for driving in most European countries for an unlimited period. Saga Select includes cover for up to 180 days and Saga Standard includes cover for up to 90 days in any policy year.
  • Onward taxi travel promise, so if you have an accident in the UK and your car’s too damaged to drive, we arrange a taxi to take you where you’re going (Saga Plus).

What’s covered with over 50s car insurance?

What your over-50s car insurance policy includes depends on how much coverage you need. Drivers have three options:

  • Third party covers damage or injury to a third party, such as another vehicle, a building or a person, but doesn’t cover the cost of repairing or replacing your car.
  • Third party, fire and theft covers a third party and protects you against fire or theft.
  • Comprehensive covers damage to your car and harm to anyone inside, someone else’s car and anyone inside, belongings inside your vehicle and vandalism. It may also offer a courtesy car if yours can’t be used after an accident. With Saga’s comprehensive cover, you get a courtesy car when yours is being fixed by our nationwide network of approved repairers after a UK-based accident.

In the UK, you must have at least third-party insurance by law. Many drivers find Comprehensive car insurance offers extra peace of mind.

Saga does not offer cover on a third party, or third party fire and theft basis.

Over 50s car insurance FAQs

Do I need a health check for over 50s car insurance?

You don’t need to have a health check to take out over 50s car insurance. However, if you have an existing medical condition that affects your driving you must declare it to the DVLA.

You can check if you have a condition that needs to be reported on the DVLA website. You can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not report a medical condition that affects your driving.

How can you make your over 50s car insurance premiums cheaper?

Age and driving experience are big factors in determining the best car insurance for over 50s. In addition, there are a number of things you can do to ensure you benefit when it comes to searching for cheap car insurance for over 50s.

  • Increase your voluntary excess – accepting a higher excess could reduce your premium, as long as you would be able to pay for any damage if you do have an accident. Please note, not all claims require you to pay an excess.
  • Improve car security – park your car in a locked garage or private driveway where possible, and always make sure your car’s secured and fully locked before you leave it.
  • Drive fewer miles – lower mileage can mean lower risk, but you must be as accurate as possible with the number of miles you plan to drive, or risk invalidating your cover.
  • Check your extras – only buy the cover you actually need, to make sure you have the right cover for your use.
  • Pay annually – this option is usually cheaper than paying monthly for insurance.

Is there an upper age limit for Saga over 50s car insurance?

You’ll need to be over 50 to qualify for our car insurance, but there is no upper age limit. As long as you’re well enough to drive and not affected by any medical conditions that prevent you from driving safely, then we’ll continue to insure you, subject to our usual terms and conditions.

There’s no maximum legal age for driving in the UK, so you’re free to continue driving as long as you are fit enough to do so. You will need to renew your driving licence at 70.

Why might someone over 50 pay more for car insurance?

Usually you would expect over 50s car insurance to be lower than for people in higher risk age groups. But there are some factors which would influence the cost of car insurance for those over 50 negatively due to a perceived higher risk, including:

  • High number of previous claims
  • Driving convictions or points on your licence
  • Higher mileage requirements
  • Once your age reaches 70 or 80

Cheap car insurance for over 50s is not always the best cover, so always check the full details of any policy you are considering to make sure it will meet all your needs.

Is age 50 too late to learn to drive?

There’s usually no reason you can’t learn to drive in your 50s. In fact, passing your driving test could open up new opportunities, including more freedom to travel, whether enjoying UK staycations or offering lifts to family.

Driving test pass rates tend to decline with age, but don’t let statistics discourage you. Stay positive, and remember that you’re not too old to learn. Embrace the process, and celebrate each step towards passing your test.

You might have a busier schedule than younger learners, so consider taking an intensive driving course. These condensed programs offer a block of lessons over a couple of weeks, with your theory and driving tests also booked in. You could also seek help from friends and family who drive – invite them to join you in the car for extra practice.
