Can we get free loft insulation?

John Conlin / 21 February 2017

Chartered surveyor John Conlin explains the ECO scheme.

We are renovating a 1968 bungalow and will need loft insulation - and the builder says we should get it free.

How do I go about this? With our small budget it would be such a help.

The free insulation scheme is part of the ECO (Energy Company Obligation) arrangement between Government and the larger gas and electricity suppliers whereby they have agreed to bear the cost of various energy saving improvements including loft and cavity wall insulation.

The companies sub-contract the work on a regional basis to specialist installers. Any residential property with less than 4 inch thick loft insulation qualifies.

Contact your gas or electricity supplier quoting the ECO scheme.
