Is triple glazing worth the money?

John Conlin / 24 April 2018

A reader is unsure whether it's worth paying extra for triple glazed windows.

Question

We intend to replace our old wooden windows. Is triple glazing worth the extra cost compared with double glazing?

Answer

Double glazing can serve two purposes. The narrower the gap between the panes of glass, the better the heat insulation; the wider the gap, the better the soundproofing. If noise is not a problem, narrow-gap double glazing using an insulation grade of glass for the outer pane may be the best option. But if you want soundproofing as well as heat insulation, triple glazing is a dual-purpose compromise.
