I have a 20-year-old oil boiler and fuel tank. I have been advised to change the boiler and consider switching to LPG as a more environmentally friendly fuel. What is your view?
Is my rented flat's boilter due a check?
Assuming your boiler is working and the tank is sound, the choice is between saving the planet or saving your money.
Boilers made 20 years ago were simple devices and replacements for most of the working parts such as igniter, blast tube, etc, remain readily available so, providing the water jacket is not leaking, it may well last a further 10 years.
Modern condensing boilers are far more complicated, less trouble free (the electronics can be temperamental) and costly to buy. Although they are supposed to be more fuel efficient they rarely pay back in their relatively short lifetime.
