When will electric wiring need renewing?

John Conlin / 26 October 2016

Chartered surveyor John Conlin advises a reader on electrical wiring.

An electrician works in a house

Our house is about 25 years old. Is the electric wiring likely to need renewing?

At 25 years old the wiring is likely to be modern plastic covered cable with a consumer unit fitted with trip switches rather than the old style replaceable wire fuses.

It is generally thought that plastic covered cable should last at least 50 years. A 25 year old consumer unit may have a plain main switch rather than a, now standard, RCD (a switch that kills the current before the current can kill you).

You would be wise to get an electrician to fit one and test the installation at the same time for peace of mind.
