How do I stop pigeons roosting on my solar panels?

John Conlin / 14 June 2018

A reader would like to stop pigeons roosting on their solar panels.

Question

A flock of wood pigeons has adopted my solar panels as a roosting place. The garden below is littered with feathers, broken egg shells etc and gutter is choked with debris and growing grass. Have you any suggestion as to how to cope with it?

Answer

I imagine that the pigeons are perching along the framed edges of your solar panels where they can get a firm claw hold. Plastic anti-perch strips are available. They comprise a base strip from which spikes, like random bunches of knitting needles, stick up making it impossible for birds to perch. The strips come in various lengths and can be fixed using an adhesive appropriate to the surface.
