A reader's cat always pees next to her litter tray instead of inside it

Question

My cat has taken to urinating on the carpet next to her tray. How do I get her to use the tray?

Answer

First, make sure you clean the tray regularly: cats don’t like using a dirty tray. Second, try a different litter substrate: cats are fussy about what they like to use.

Third, get a bigger tray: the standard ones are too small for some cats. And finally, try a different location to change the routine and break the bad habit.
