How do I prevent hairballs?

Dr Pete Wedderburn / 19 June 2018

A reader would like to do something to prevent her cats coughing up hairballs.

Long haired cat

Question

My semi-longhaired cats are groomed regularly but they are still coughing up hairballs. Is there anything I can do to help them?

Answer

Even if you brush cats, they still self-groom, licking their own coats and swallowing some fur. Many vets now believe that just because clumps of hair are regurgitated does not mean that they are the cause of the regurgitation. Other reasons, such as parasites or dietary sensitivities, are more common. Worm your cats and change their diet. This may solve the problem.
