Dr Pete Wedderburn / 24 July 2018

After several happy years living together a reader's cat has recently started to bully their other cat.

Question

We have had two cats living happily together for a number of years, however recently the relationship has soured and our younger male cat has started bossing our senior female cat around. Is this normal behaviour?

Answer

There is a myth that all the cats in a multi-cat household should be friends. In fact, cats are solitary, independent creatures. As kittens grow up, they often get fed up with other cats. Make sure that you provide enough space for your cats to live separate lives in your home, giving each their own food and water bowls, sleeping places and litter trays, some distance from each other.
