Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs star in this touching, slow-burning adaptation of Raynor Winn’s prize-winning memoir. Ray (Anderson) and her husband Moth (Isaacs) are finding middle-age life harder than most. They’re homeless after a bad investment, and Moth has been given a devastating medical diagnosis. The kids have left home, and they’re skint.
With nowhere else to go, the couple decides to walk the 630-mile South West Coastal Path from Somerset, camping in a shoddy tent along the way. While most people are hiking to enjoy the natural beauty, Ray and Moth are enduring it as a last resort, stuck in limbo – the only way forward is to put one foot in front of the other. But as they walk and talk, they gradually come to reclaim a little of the joy in life and find a way to live again.
It’s a sweet tale that’s made all the more sympathetic due to being based on a true story – and being portrayed by two top-class actors.
Anderson puts in a subtle, realistic performance as the caring Raynor, once the proud owner of a comfortable country home, who is now scraping around her purse for pennies so they can eat. Isaacs brings a likeable, down-to-earth mood to Moth, who’s also trying to keep his pride while struggling with a debilitating condition.
The pace of the film is slow at times, pausing on some details for longer than it needs to. But there are lovely moments to treasure, from Moth’s spontaneous busking to the scenes in a bohemian commune.
This makes you think about the value of life, love, and perseverance – and the locations look beautiful on the big screen.
