Saga's guide to getting a dog

03 June 2016

From choosing the right breed to the first night with your dog, find out what you need to consider before committing.

A dog hangs its head out of a window

Owning a dog can be a hugely rewarding experience and many people approaching retirement or newly retired can look forward to spending their free time with a four-legged companion.

Not only do many retirees have the time needed to give a dog the care and attention it needs, but dogs can also be a great source of companionship and a good way of getting regular exercise and staying fit. They can also be a great way to meet new people through the dogwalking community, fun dog shows and training classes. It's not surprising that research carried out by Saga has found that one in five people plan on getting a pet in retirement!

This guide aims to help you on your first steps to getting a dog and includes information about the different dog groups, how to find a reputable breeder, the benefits of rehoming a rescue dog and useful tips for bringing your dog home and making him or her part of the family.
