All these sausage rolls were ‘ready to eat’ but can be cooked. We found cooking transformed them, so we advise doing so too – even if you subsequently eat them cold.

WINNER: Aldi Specially Selected 4 Hog Roast Sausage Rolls

188g, £2.19

These were good-looking with flaky, crisp pastry and ample sausage meat, sweetened by apple sauce. With a thyme dusting, all in all a great twist on a traditional sausage roll.

Higgidy 6 Great British Pork Sausage Rolls

160g, £3.30

Lovely, moist and substantial pastry, with a sprinkling of poppy seeds. The caramelised onion flavour slightly masks the pork but overall these were tasty.

Tesco 20 Mini Sausage Rolls

Although a satisfactory amount of meat, these were rather bland, and the pastry was neither crisp nor very appetising.

M&S 6 British Sausage Rolls

Excellent pastry with a dark and golden hue, which was both moist and firm. Packed with a hearty quantity of deliciously spiced sausage meat. Tasty and traditional.

Waitrose Essential 15 Mini Sausage Rolls

225g, £2.30

With lovely, golden pastry and excellent meat content, these looked good, but the taste did not live up to the appearance. They lacked in overall flavour.

Insufficient pork in a dry, bland-looking and uninspiring pastry. However, these sausage rolls were much improved after cooking.

Tiny ‘bite-size’ sausage rolls with good, flaky pastry. Although a little light on the quantity of sausage meat, these were still pleasant. Good but not filling.
