The best tinned cream of chicken soup: tried and tasted

Our expert tasters put supermarket and top brand tinned cream of chicken soup to the test to find out which is the best to buy.

Cream of chicken soup has recently knocked tomato off the top spot as the UK's favourite soup.

Every supermarket or top brand has its own tinned version, so to find out the best to buy, our experts put them to the test.

1. Winner: Crosse & Blackwell Cream of Roast Chicken Soup

400g, RRP: £1.25

Although pale in colour, ample succulent chicken flakes and a notable presence of potato and leek made this look appetising and gave it real substance.

With a rich creaminess and subtle seasoning, the chicken flavour was suitably enhanced and delivered a delicious end result. Our favourite by far.

2. Morrisons Cream of Chicken Soup

400g, RRP: 65p

With a slightly dark hue and a thick and creamy texture, this was very appetising to look at and tasted great too. It had sufficient small pieces of diced chicken in a well-seasoned and nicely balanced soup.

The chicken flavour could have had more depth, perhaps, but it was nonetheless very tasty.

Rating: 8/10

3. M&S Cream of Chicken Soup

400g, RRP: 65p

Quite pale in colour and with a very creamy viscosity and nicely balanced seasoning. The medley of vegetables in the ingredients was not particularly evident but added to the balance of the soup.

The overriding fennel taste may not to be everyone’s liking and it overpowered any real chicken flavour.

4. Aldi Bramwells Cream of Chicken Soup

400g, RRP: 63p

This looked appetising but tasted more of stock than creamy chicken, though a rather pleasant peppery tang did enhance the flavour.

The chicken was finely shredded but lacked quantity. Perfectly pleasant but nothing special.

5. Heinz Cream of Chicken Soup

400g, RRP: £1.74

Smooth and creamy coloured, slightly gloopy in consistency, but lacking in distinct chicken flavour. There were a few small chunks of meat present, which added some texture, though not enough to enhance the depth of the soup.

To be honest, you would expect more for the price.

6. Baxters Favourites Cream of Chicken

400g, RRP: £2.15

This had a pleasant colour and a nice creamy texture. The chicken flakes were good and did add some substance, but the overall flavour lacked depth and was a bit too peppery.

It looked good and was satisfying on the palate, but it ultimately seemed overpriced.

7. Co-op Cream of Chicken Soup

400g, RRP: 90p

At first sight this looked very appetising with a slightly yellowish hue and a very creamy texture. However, it didn’t really deliver on taste.

We discovered only a few small flakes of chicken and the soup lacked any real creaminess or authentic chicken flavour, all of which resulted in a rather artificial taste with a faint cheese-like tinge.

Rating: 6/10

8. Sainsbury’s Cream of Chicken Soup

400g, RRP: 63p

Darker in colour than the others, this soup was a little gloopy and contained only a small amount of shredded chicken.

The taste lacked the creaminess one would expect and there was little substance or deep flavour. Somewhat disappointing.

9. Tesco Cream of Chicken Soup

400g, RRP: 63p

This lacked both creaminess and chicken. It was thin and watery in consistency with little evidence of chicken pieces, leaving the soup lacking in both texture and substance.

The flavour was rather flat, with minimal seasoning and very little depth.
