“Change your light, change your life,” is the mantra at Serious Readers. It’s a bold claim, but one that the company stands by, with more than one million lights in 93 countries.

Now, one lucky Saga Magazine reader can discover this for themselves, as Serious Readers is giving away its most advanced reading light, the HD Pro Floor Light, worth £499.

We’re all familiar with the irritation of trying to read, work, or perform an intricate task in insufficient light. And those problems are likely to increase with age. According to optometrist Brian Tompkins, “As you go from 20 to 60, you need three times more light.”

But it’s not just the brightness of the light that is the issue – it’s the fidelity, too. Most internal lighting uses a blue LED chip that cannot reproduce the full visible spectrum. The wavelengths you need for reading are not there, making your brain work harder. What should be a relaxing activity becomes an effort.

Furthermore, regular indoor lighting is not conducive to sleep. A 2011 Harvard study showed that ordinary room lights delayed melatonin onset in 99% of participants, potentially affecting sleep patterns.

Serious Readers’ HD Pro uses a purple LED chip that projects an intense beam of pure, full-spectrum daylight. On the standard measure of colour rendering, where sunlight scores 100, a typical household LED rarely gets above 80. The HD Pro scores 98, producing light that feels natural, sharpening small print, enhancing colour, and limiting fatigue, while not delaying melatonin onset. Serious Readers is recommended by more than 500 independent opticians in the UK.

The HD Pro boasts a wealth of user-friendly functions. The light’s beam can be widened, narrowed, brightened or dimmed to suit your specific needs. The bendable “stayput” arm is guaranteed for life, while the design keeps the light cool to the touch. There’s also a snooze function that will turn your light off if you fall asleep. The HD Pro can be ordered with a remote-control handset and in a cordless format. There are even chromatic lenses to help those with light sensitivity.

Serious Readers has sensational customer ratings of 4.9/5 on both Feefo and Trustpilot. And the company is so confident you will love its products that it offers a 90-day trial of the HD Pro (99.4% of customers keep their light).
