What’s not covered in over-60s health insurance?
Health insurance for individuals over 60 typically excludes cover for the following:
- Pre-existing medical conditions:
Private health insurance generally covers conditions that arise after the policy begins. Any conditions existing in the three years prior to the policy’s start date may not be covered. Read more about our health insurance underwriting methods to see how we may be able to cover you for pre-existing medical conditions. - Cosmetic treatments:
Health insurance only covers essential medical treatments. Treatments you have chosen to have, like cosmetic or weight loss surgeries, are not included. - Emergency treatment:
Conditions for which urgent or emergency treatment is needed are not covered. If you have a serious or life-threatening condition which needs urgent treatment the NHS will treat that condition. - Chronic conditions:
Private healthcare doesn’t provide long-term treatment for chronic conditions. Diabetes, angina, and arthritis fall into this category.
What are the benefits of health insurance for over 60s?
As you enter your 60s and beyond, the likelihood of encountering medical issues increases. Private medical insurance provides cover for any health problems that may arise, offering peace of mind. Additionally, it comes with several benefits:
Prompt treatment
Private medical care allows you to avoid NHS waiting lists, ensuring faster access to the treatment you need.
Specialist referrals
See private specialists at a time and location that suits you. We will support you by sourcing and providing a selection of specialists for you to choose from.
Physiotherapy
Enjoy speedy access to physiotherapists.
Privacy
You will usually have a private room with your own TV, phone, internet access and choice of meals to provide the ideal environment in which to recuperate in peace and comfort.
Cancer Cover
Three of our HealthPlans (Super, Secure and Saver Plus) offer cover for the active treatment of cancer, including access to the latest drugs, radiotherapy, chemotherapy in private hospitals and support from a cancer care team.
Defaqto 5 Star rated health insurance
We are proud to offer five-star treatment every day with Saga Health Insurance. Saga Healthplan Super is 5 Star rated by Defaqto.
How much is private health insurance for over 60s?
The cost of health insurance for those over 60 depends on the type of cover selected. Saga offers four HealthPlans: Super, Secure, Saver Plus and Support. Each provides different levels of cover (Super is the most comprehensive).
Health insurance prices also depend on the individual. Costs will vary from person to person, with age being one of the factors that insurers will consider. As people grow older, they are more likely to require treatment, so this is reflected in prices. Your premium could also be affected if you make a claim, which reduces your No Claim Discount.
When is the best time to get health insurance for over 60s?
There isn’t a specific age that’s best for buying health insurance. It’s not necessary to obtain cover as soon as you reach your 60s. Each person’s situation is unique, and the decision may depend on individual circumstances.
However, it’s possible to get health insurance at any age, including during your 60s. Having cover provides peace of mind, knowing you’re protected for medical treatment in case of any unforeseen situations, which can be more likely in later life.
How do I make a health insurance claim?
Claiming your health insurance with Saga is straightforward. If you follow these steps:
- Get a referral:
If you need a consultation or treatment, start by getting a referral from a GP, dentist, or another healthcare professional. Referrals from Saga’s GP Service are accepted. - Contact us:
Call us on 0330 018 0778 or contact us via Bupa’s website or download the My Bupa app. We’ll discuss your options and explain what you’re covered for. Our adviser will talk you through what you need to do next and will send any pre-treatment forms that you need to complete with your GP. We’ll provide information about local specialists, facilities, and healthcare professionals who can assist you. Additionally, we’ll give you a pre-authorisation number, which allows the healthcare provider to bill us directly. - Specialist recommendations:
If your specialist recommends additional tests or treatments, call us again and get further pre-authorisation. - Claim process:
After making your claim, Bupa usually pays the treatment provider directly.
For muscle, bone, or joint pain, you can access advice and treatment faster without the need for a GP referral. Just call Bupa on 0330 018 0778, and they’ll verify your cover.
If you want to make a claim for dental care via your Health Cash Benefits Cover, download the claim form and follow the instructions.
