Bournemouth has beaches, piers, a promenade, parks, entertainment venues, art galleries — and an amazing array of great places to eat. Here’s our round-up of the best restaurants in the city centre, at the seafront, and in nearby Westbourne and Southbourne.

Best for evenings out

Côte Brasserie

A convenient three-minute walk to Bournemouth’s Pavilion Theatre, and the 10-screen multiplex ODEON cinema at Bh2, Côte Brasserie is a stylish bistro serving authentic French cuisine. If seeing a show during the week, the three-course set menu available until 7pm is excellent value at £13.50. Enjoy a ratatouille with goats’ cheese starter, Toulouse sausages main and finish with a crème caramel dessert. Look out for lunchtime and weekend offers too.

Best for fish and chips

Chez Fred

When at the seaside, it’s par for the course that you tuck into some fish and chips, and those dished up at Chez Fred are among the best in Bournemouth. For the past three decades, this family-run establishment have been serving up the finest quality, sustainably sourced fish coated in a crisp batter, as well as fat fluffy chips and homemade mushy peas. Pop along on a Monday and all fish is available in a special gluten-free batter.

Arbor Restaurant

There’s a huge emphasis on well-cooked, honest, imaginative dishes at Arbor, an award-winning restaurant led by chef Andy Hilton. Arbor strongly believes dining shouldn’t cost the Earth, so menus change with the seasons and much of the produce is locally sourced — food miles are monitored. Located in an eco-friendly hotel, the Green House dining area was also developed on sustainable principles, so you can enjoy a meal here with a clear conscious.

Best for tasting menus

Restaurant Roots

There’s only room for 18 guests at Restaurant Roots, a fine dining restaurant in the Bournemouth suburb of Southbourne, so book ahead, make a reservation, then feel smug knowing you’ll be one of the fortunate few who get the pleasure of an outstanding tasting menu experience — the husband and wife team at the helm claim it’ll give you a new perspective on eating out. Intriguing Classic and Discovery options are available.

Best for hungry shoppers

Café Rouge

If you like to browse in independent shops and boutiques, then the thriving shopping centre in the Westbourne area of Bournemouth will be right up your street. And when you’re ready for a bite to eat, whatever the time of day, Café Rouge is sure to satisfy those hunger pangs. The French-inspired menu caters for all tastes, with à la carte and seasonal good-value set menus available. There’s also a detailed allergen menu.

Best for seaside seafood

The Crab at Bournemouth

Opposite BIC and close to Bournemouth’s sandy beaches, diners can enjoy the finest seafood at The Crab, a contemporary restaurant that puts a creative twist on the seaside’s traditional fish and chips. As you’d anticipate, crab is on the menu too, alongside lobster, scallops, oysters and smoked duck. Consider the three-course set menu for under £25 if you wish to eat at lunchtime or early evening.

Best for Sunday lunch

The Larder House

Dining is casual and intimate at The Larder House, a restaurant in the Southbourne area of Bournemouth that is getting quite a reputation as the place to be for Sunday lunch. With sharing Social Suzannes on the menu, alongside traditional roasts and innovative tapas, all tastes are catered for. Have a browse through the Galette menu too, a selection of French-style pancakes with a delicious savoury filling. They are also all gluten-free.

Best for Thai delights

Tiien Thai

If you love authentic Thai food, you’re in for a gastronomic treat at Tiien Thai, a much-rated restaurant on Bournemouth’s West Cliff — the friendly relaxed atmosphere gets the thumbs up too. Chefs use the finest ingredients to produce sublime flavours, with soup, salads, curries, stir-fried dishes and noodles all on the menu. Other branches can be found at Westbourne and Broadstone. Best for dog walkers


Although the quirky colourful décor may not be to everyone’s taste, this much-talked-about eatery certainly attracts the crowds, especially creative types who bring along their families (and dogs) to enjoy hearty meals (pies, jacket potatoes) and lighter snacks (wraps, panini), as well as heavenly Flirt waffles topped with lashings of cream. Hot chocolates, smoothies and milkshakes are equally as filling, as are the substantial breakfasts.

Best for sea views


This beachside restaurant not only serves up some amazing fresh seafood, its location means you can enjoy fine dining while taking in some spectacular sea views — if the weather’s being kind, ask for a table on the decked terrace. The à la carte menu has plenty of choice but make sure you also check out the chalkboard for specials and the catch of the day. A Quick Lunch menu is available until 5pm at weekends.
