For many people, hearing loss happens gradually. You may still manage day to day but start avoiding busy restaurants or group conversations because listening takes so much effort. Looking after your hearing is part of looking after your wellbeing, and a hearing test can help you understand what is happening and what support may be available.
Hearing aids can make a real difference for many people. However, if you already wear hearing aids and speech still sounds unclear it may be worth asking whether they are giving you enough benefit.
For people with severe hearing loss, a cochlear implant may be another option to explore – and they are funded on the National Health Services of the UK and Ireland for those who meet the criteria.
Elizabeth, from Surrey, began struggling with her hearing in her late 40s and by age 51 she had become profoundly deaf and could no longer hear even her own voice without powerful hearing aids.
“It became tiring to keep up with a conversation,” she says. “I was becoming more isolated from engaging with my family and my partner.”
After speaking to her audiologist, Elizabeth was referred for further hearing tests and went on to receive a cochlear implant, which she describes as “life-changing”.
Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, a cochlear implant can help make sounds clearer. It includes a small internal implant and an external sound processor that sits behind the ear.
Since receiving her implant, Elizabeth says she feels more connected to everyday life again.
“I go to the cinema and concerts or outings I avoided before my implant. I can hear myself breathing, birds singing, my cat meowing, my oven timer and my doorbell.”
If hearing loss is making life feel smaller, it may be time to take the next step.
