Our solar panel company has gone bust

John Conlin / 23 July 2018

A reader is concerned that he no longer has a guarantee on his solar panels after the company that installed them has gone into liquidation.

Solar panels

Don’t know whether you can help. I have been left high and dry by two companies who gave 25 year guarantees on solar panels and loft insulation but have now gone into liquidation leaving me with most of the guarantee unused. Have you any suggestion on other help available? I have already contacted the Ombudsman but they are only able to deal with those companies who are registered with them. I have since been contacted by a utility company who have said I need my solar system updated and quoted £5500.

Sadly your experience is far from unique. Unless you are dealing with a major national company the only worthwhile guarantee is one backed by an insurance company. I would not worry too much about the loft insulation, providing it was installed properly there is unlikely to be anything to go wrong.

Upgrading solar systems is becoming something of a scam. It is unlikely that you would ever recover the cost of the upgrade from the extra electricity produced. Providing your existing system is producing some electricity I would leave well alone.
