These cream-filled, chocolate-drizzled choux pastry balls are always popular – but which brand make the perfect pud?

Arranged as a rectangular stack, these are nicely decorated and appealing.
The choux is soft and light and the cream excellent, while the rich chocolate topping is appetising, though blobbed on and firm, not ‘smothered’ as described on the packaging.
450g, £2.75
An excellent value tray of large profiteroles smothered in tasty chocolate sauce, albeit less rich than Belgian chocolate ones.
The choux is firm, while the cream has a good consistency and quite a boozy flavour, which may be too much for some.
150g (2x75g), £2.65
Three relatively small-sized buns, with perfect choux pastry and plenty of chocolate sauce, in an individual pot.
The sauce is exquisite and combines wonderfully with the vanilla cream filling enhanced with a subtle alcohol flavour. If only they were bigger.
300g, £4
Nicely presented in a pyramid with a dusting of icing sugar, though the pastry is a little soggy and the chocolate has a slight aftertaste.
But, they do have a great combined taste – and they look appetising too.
220g, £4
Good sized profiteroles in a pyramid stack, though the chocolate coating is sparse and unevenly distributed.
The pastry isn’t firm enough, the cream doesn’t really hit the spot and there isn’t much satisfaction in the overall, rather bland, taste.
230g, £4.25
A pleasantly presented stack served with chocolate sauce and topped with grated chocolate. The topping improves when softened, and is in fact our favourite, though the amount is insufficient.
The choux tastes a tad overcooked and dry and the cream filling is good, but a bit synthetic.
