From iconic mountains and glacial lakes to stunning waterways, Saga's Rocky Mountains and Alaskan Adventure cruise and tour holiday combines excitement with comfort.
Majestic icebergs, snow-capped peaks. remote rainforests, and old gold rush towns, Alaska is considered the continent’s last frontier for good reason – it’s even the state’s official nickname. An astounding destination of complete and utter wilderness, where bald eagles soar, polar bears roam and humpback whales breach, America’s 49th state is a place to immerse yourself.
Reached by Canada’s Inside Passage, a 930-mile-long network of coastal waterways stretching from Washington State and through British Columbia, this is a journey of unforgettable landscapes. And the best way to explore it is on a trip combining adventure with real comfort.
Saga’s 18-day Rocky Mountains and Alaskan Adventure takes you aboard the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train, then continues by sea with Holland America Line. As Saga’s guests on board, you’ll benefit from Holland America’s Have It All package, which includes everything from drinks to speciality dining, WiFi on board, and excursion credit.
Saga also includes a shared chauffeur service, travel insurance, tour manager, cancellation cover and, on 2027 escorted tours, half-board meals. Plus there’s Saga’s Love It First Time guarantee: if you’ve never travelled with Saga before, and you’re not absolutely thrilled with your holiday, they’ll arrange your travel home and a full refund – so you can book with absolute confidence.
Starting your journey from Calgary, you’ll visit the startlingly turquoise Lake Louise – a glacial lake surrounded by high peaks. After crossing the scenic Icefields Parkway and exploring Jasper National Park, step aboard the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train. Its custom glassdome coaches mean you won’t miss a second of the 360º panoramas unspooling in front of you: from Pyramid Falls, a spectacular 300ft waterfall, to Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, and the Albreda Icefields.
Stretch your legs during an overnight stop in the riverside city of Kamloops before forging on to Vancouver via ever-changing terrain, from the semi-arid interior of British Columbia to the fertile farmland of the Fraser Valley. Onboard you’ll feast on gourmet, locally inspired cuisine, enjoy the kind of world-class hospitality that ensures your wine glass never goes unfilled, and learn more about your surroundings from the Mountaineer hosts, who regale you with fun facts and engaging stories.
On day eight, you’ll arrive in Vancouver, one of Canada’s most striking cities. While it has a buzzy, urban feel, it’s also fabulously naturefocused, so once you’ve dropped your bags off at the hotel, head straight to Stanley Park. Jutting out into the Burrard Inlet, its 11/2 square miles are thickly forested with half a million trees.
Walk the famous Seawall loop that skirts the perimeter and look out for landmarks such as Prospect Point, which offers scenic harbour views, the sandy shores of Second and Third beaches, and the colourful, elaborately carved First Nations totem poles.
You can also take the charming little False Creek ferry or a rainbow-coloured Aquabus over to Granville Island, a shopping and arts district home to the Public Market. Here you’ll find dozens of stalls, shops and restaurants selling the freshest food from oysters and sockeye salmon to artisanal cheeses and patisserie.
And if you think all that was spectacular, that’s just the beginning. Board the premium MS Zaandam for your 7-night cruise to Alaska, sailing Canada’s Inside Passage. The ship offers everything from live entertainment to spa treatments, but we predict you’ll be even more gripped by what you’ll see outside.
You’ll weave through intricate fjords and calm waters and spot wildlife from orcas, seals and dolphins to eagles and grizzly bears.
Once you’ve reached Alaska, the scenery truly starts to become otherworldly. You’ll begin in the capital, Juneau, which lies within Tongass National Forest – the largest temperate rainforest in the world – and is surrounded by mountains and glaciers. There’s a stop in Skagway, an historic port that played a key role during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 19th century, and you’ll dock in Ketchikan, a town known for its Native Alaskan heritage, with one of the largest collections of totem poles.
The highlight is a day cruising through Glacier Bay National Park, a protected area of glaciers, fjords and snow-capped peaks. Marvel at the vibrant colours of the ice – from electric blue to aquamarine – and listen out for the creaking as tidewater glaciers calve into the sea. With Saga’s tour, you’ll be seeing this phenomenal region in the very best way.
