"We’re seeing more people embrace extreme day trips: short, high-intensity trips where you fly out and back in the same day, especially around bank holidays. But what many don’t realise is not all travel insurance policies provide cover for trips under 24 hours or those without an overnight stay.

"Travellers should take caution, as it’s an easy detail to overlook and even whirlwind getaways come with risk – like flight delays, cancellations or medical emergencies.

"Regardless, we always recommend checking your policy carefully before booking this kind of trip and being aware of the risk."

“It’s strongly recommended that travellers retain all receipts for accommodation, meals, and transport, along with written confirmation from airlines or travel providers about any cancellations or delays - like emails and texts,” she says.

“It may be helpful to take photos of receipts, too. These documents will be needed when submitting a claim. Where possible, take screenshots of airline communications and save copies offline too, in case internet access is disrupted."

“If your hotel had no working emergency lighting, air con, or fire safety systems, it may not have been safe to stay," says Cooper.

If your flight was cancelled, your airline or tour operator should be your first port of call as they’re legally obliged to rebook the trip or refund you.

"Depending on how you paid, you may also need to speak with your Credit or Debit card provider as they offer protection for purchases between £100 and £30,000.

If your flight is delayed, most insurance policies will also offer a delayed departure cover, so it’s also worth checking your insurance policy.”
