Dash cams have really caught on with motorists. Why? Because they keep track of events during your journey, can prove extremely helpful if you’re involved in an accident that’s not your fault and can influence driver behaviour for the better.

If you haven’t got this piece of video kit in your car yet, it’s time to find out what it is, whether you need one, and how you could win an award-winning 322GW from Nextbase worth £119 if you enter our prize draw by 11.59pm on Wednesday 31 August 2022.

What is a dash cam?

Mounted on the inside of your windscreen behind your rearview mirror, it’s a camera that records footage of the road ahead (plus the road behind if you choose a multiple-lens option). Once installed, it runs automatically when your engine is on. So if there’s an incident during a journey, you can give a full and accurate account of events, and provide the footage to prove it!

Why is it useful?

A dash cam offers a variety of benefits:

  • It acts as your independent witness on the roads and if you’re involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault, it can help you prove that.
  • By helping to prove you’re not at fault, it can protect your No Claim Discount.
  • If you’ve collided with another vehicle, it can help to identify how many people were in the other car and protect you against fraudulent claims for whiplash.
  • Depending on the type of dash cam you have, it can even help prove who was at fault for small bumps and scrapes.
  • Being able to provide video proof for a claim can speed up the claims process.

Best features to look out for

Dash cams vary widely in price. Here are some of the features to look out for when shopping around:

This feature shows the route you’ve taken and the speed at which you’ve travelled, and can show the exact location of any incident.

This technology detects vibrations from bumps, impacts and sudden acceleration or deceleration and tags them so you can find the video footage easily later.

Parking mode

The camera automatically starts recording if it senses an impact while you’re in a carpark.

Footage can be transmitted wirelessly without having to remove the dash cam from your car.

Emergency SOS

This is the latest safety feature. It ensures the emergency services are sent to the scene of an accident if the driver doesn’t respond to a smart phone alert. This feature is included in the Nextbase 322GW, which you could win in the prize draw below.

Don’t get caught out

While installing a dash cam is a great idea for careful drivers wanting to avoid being the victim of cash-for-crash scams and false claims, there are a few legalities to be aware of:

  • Dash cams must be installed without obstructing your field of vision. The Highway Code states that nothing should intrude more than 40mm into the area of the windscreen swept by the wiper blades.
  • If you’re involved in an accident that is your fault or are stopped by the police, your dash cam footage can be used as evidence against you.
  • If you’ve collided with another vehicle, it can help to identify how many people were in the other car and protect you against fraudulent claims for whiplash.
  • You must inform passengers in your car that you have a dash cam and that they are being recorded.
  • Dash cams have restricted use in some countries, so if you’re taking the car overseas, check the laws of the country you’ll be driving in.

Win a dash cam with Emergency SOS!

We’re giving Saga customers the opportunity to take part in a prize draw to win 1 of 25 Nextbase 332GW dashcams worth £119.

The Nextbase 322GW is the world’s first dash cam with emergency response. This revolutionary safety feature can alert the emergency services to the exact location of an accident.

When an incident is detected, Emergency SOS (ESOS) will ring the driver’s phone to ensure they’re safe. If the phone remains unanswered, the emergency services will be alerted.

You can input important medical details such as allergies, blood type and medical history beforehand, so if the emergency services ever need to attend, they’ll have all the information about you they need. Emergency SOS is included free on the Nextbase 322GW for the first 12 months. After that the service will cost £2.99 a month.
