A reader would like to know whether acoustic glass is as good as triple glazing

Question

Is a single pane of acoustic glass as good as triple glazing for sound-proofing?

Answer

Acoustic glass comprises a sheet of soft plastic sandwiched between two sheets of ordinary glass forming a laminated panel. It is frequently used in large panel sizes as partitions within offices or in noisy public environments such as airports.

Standard air or gas-filled triple glazing will have much the same sound proofing but has the bonus of superior heat insulation. Vacuum treated triple glazing is the ‘gold standard’ for sound proofing as noise cannot travel through a vacuum.
