Winner: Sainsbury’s 6 Bake at Home White Petits Pains

The golden colour looked appetising, and they tasted as good as they looked. A crunchy crust with a light, airy dough, this was a truly French petit pain

The crust browned well and crisped nicely on the outside, but inside the dough was heavy and lacked flavour.

Essential Waitrose 6 Bake at Home Petit Pains

A firm, golden crust and a superb light dough. The only thing lacking was an authentic French bread taste.

Morrisons Part Baked Petits Pains White x6

A beautifully flavoured, browned crispy crust that was somewhat let down by the dough, which did not deliver on taste and could have had a lighter texture.

Menissez Bake at Home 6 Mini Pains (from M&S)

300g, £1.60

Very tasty with a crunchy crust and a nicely textured dough, both of which held their consistency when cool. A little more flavour and these would be perfect.

Aldi Village Bakery 4 Bake at Home White Rolls

300g, 85p

Larger rolls that cooked well with a pleasant crust. The dough was a little dense and lacked real taste, but great value and perfectly palatable.

BFree White Demi Baguettes x2

220g, £3.10

As a gluten-free alternative, these were acceptable but, for the price, they didn’t really hit the spot. They did not crisp up well and the dough was stodgy and quite tasteless.
