A quick chat on the phone was all that it took for Michael Hartt, when he first contacted Tina via Saga Dating. ‘It was her lovely lilting voice – she sounded fun. That was what did it for me.’
Mike, 80, was divorced and was living alone on the south coast. ‘I decided that it would be nicer if I could share my life with someone. I read about the dating site in Saga Magazine and thought I’d try it out.
‘I put my profile on there and met a couple of people, but nothing happened. As my membership came to an end, I thought I’d renew it for another three months, and Tina’s profile popped up. It was her website name that first caught my attention – tinabythesea. She also had a lovely smile and it looked like we had a lot in common.’
Tina, 69, had been widowed for just over ten years when she took out a membership to Saga Dating. ‘While I was quite happy on my own, I thought it would be a bit more fun if I had someone to share things with.
When Mike contacted me, I’d just lost my dog, so I emailed back and said I needed to get over the loss – but if he was willing to wait two or three weeks, perhaps we could meet up then.’
Patience paid off. They arranged to meet at a National Trust garden halfway between where they both lived. ‘I always joke that she drove round the corner into the car park on two wheels; she was going so fast the
stones were flying all over the place!’
Neither was nervous. ‘We’d spoken on the phone and I could tell we’d get on,’ says Tina. ‘We met at 11am and didn’t leave until 5pm. We didn’t stop talking and laughing!’ When she got home, Tina sent Mike a text saying it was the first time in years she hadn’t looked at her watch all day.
Michael and Tina are obviously delighted they took the plunge and joined the dating site. ‘We have such fun together and love going away on holidays and short breaks. We wouldn’t be doing that if we hadn’t met. The Saga Dating site was the one I felt safest on,’ says Tina. ‘It’s right for our age group and it was very efficient. It didn’t seem expensive for what you got. We both had a vast selection of potential partners to choose from and you could find out so much about people before getting in touch.’
The happy couple return every June to the same National Trust garden to celebrate the day they met.
