Anniversary trips on a budget

27 September 2019

Whether you have been married forever, or you’ve only recently got married, there’s no reason why you can’t mark your wedding anniversary with a special trip. But that also doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank, writes Rebecca Clarke.

As an age group, the over 50s have never been so well travelled. As the world becomes more accessible to everyone, we are now seeing more and more people travelling and for many people, the fact that children have moved out and retirement is pending (or you might already be retired) means that you now have more freedom than you might have had for decades.

So, if you’re coming up for an anniversary and want to do something special to celebrate, why not incorporate travel into it? You have plenty of options for an unforgettable trip that won’t cost you a fortune…

Coach tour holiday

For an inexpensive yet unforgettable getaway, taking a coach tour holiday is a great option. With trips around the UK and Europe, you can let someone else take the organisational aspects away from you, leaving you and your loved one to enjoy everything that the trip has to offer. Trips include visits to some of the UK and Europe’s most beautiful natural beauty spots, historical treasures or other places of interest such as Britain’s railways, a weekend in Blackpool or a trip that incorporates the Cheltenham World Cup.

Another benefit of a coach tour holiday is that if you have a full-time carer, it is easy to take them on a trip with you. Coach tours today are very different from the ones of old. The coaches are comfortable with all the mod cons, relaxing and a very pleasant way to move around.

Walking holiday

Another inexpensive holiday option would be a walking holiday. The UK has some of the best walking in the world and a climate that generally suits it – all for free. Whether you hit the Lake District, the Cotswolds or the Peak District you can see some of the country’s most stunning landscapes whilst spending some quality time with just the two of you.

Walking is also great for your health and you can find delightful walks that suit any ability – regardless of whether you’re a seasoned walker or have never tried map reading before. Expending all that energy also gives you the perfect excuse for an indulgent romantic meal at the end of the day.

City break

You can now get to most cities in Europe quickly and at reasonable prices. A romantic city break at low-cost travel means that you can splash out a little more on a romantic hotel or a couple of nice meals out.

Some of Europe’s best and most traditional cities for romance include Paris, Barcelona and Prague, but if you’re watching the purse strings cities such as Budapest, Bratislava or Athens are just as great. Steeped with history and European culture, you can find reasonably priced accommodation and food in most European cities.

Cooking trip

If you’re both into your food and cooking, a cooking course or trip is a great way to celebrate a wedding anniversary. You can choose the course according to what your budget is – either opting for a few hours course or a longer weekend or weeklong trip.

This gives you the chance to learn something new, together, maybe get away for a few days and have a bonding experience that you will never forget. There is also a chance that you will meet other, like-minded people who share your love for all things food and make friends for life.

Mini cruise

When people talk about going on a cruise, the most common reaction is to think of a grand boat that whisks you around the world and costing a fortune. This isn’t necessarily the case, and you can find short cruises of a few days that won’t cost you the earth.

A mini cruise allows you to see some of the world, at your leisure whilst not having to lift a finger and being thoroughly pampered. Perfect for a wedding anniversary. The on-board entertainment means that you will never be bored, and the ship will be filled with knowledgeable people who can explain everything about where you are going. If you are worried about your health, there is also a team of health experts on hand in case you need them.

As you head into your freedom years, any anniversary is a good excuse to have a trip. There are many options open to you both. So many, in fact, that it will be difficult to know what to choose!
