About the Royal Observatory and Flamsteed House

The Royal Observatory is home to the world-famous Meridian Line and the birthplace of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), offering one of London’s best views from the Meridian Courtyard.

Discover John Harrison's groundbreaking timekeepers which solved the scientific mysteries of longitude, marvel at the UK’s largest-lensed telescope, and be mesmerised by the Camera Obscura, with its spellbinding moving panorama of London.

Then explore magnificent, Grade I-listed Flamsteed House. Dating from 1675, the house was commissioned by King Charles II and designed by Sir Christopher Wren, and was once home to the Astronomers Royal. Spend time enjoying the breathtaking Octagon Room, which was designed for the observation of astronomical events including eclipses, comets and planetary movements.

Important accessibility information

Accessibility is limited and not wheelchair-friendly due to the nature of the venue, with cobbled courtyards and staircases to climb.

The Royal Observatory is at the top of a hill, and there is no disabled access to the site’s older buildings including Flamsteed House.
