What is personal possessions insurance?
Personal belongings insurance protects your valuables against theft, loss and damage when you take them out of your home. We know that these incidents can happen at any time, which is why our cover protects your possessions anywhere in the world.
Worldwide cover for your personal belongings is included as standard with Saga Plus home insurance, and can be added to your Saga Select policy at any time by contacting us.
Are personal possessions covered by home insurance?
Contents insurance covers things in your home, and sometimes in sheds or garages. Personal possessions insurance covers items you may take out of the house, like your phone, your tablet or your camera, when you are away from home.
What’s covered by personal belongings insurance?
Our Worldwide cover for your personal belongings covers the loss of or damage to your personal belongings when you’re away from home, as well as items that you’ve hired and are legally responsible for.
These valuables might include (but aren’t limited to):
- Mobile phones
- Laptops
- Tablets
- Cameras
- Jewellery
- Sports equipment
- Wallets, purses and handbags
- Musical instruments
We also cover bicycles, but they are covered slightly differently. Read more about our bicycle cover.
How much cover do I need for my personal possessions?
You can pick £2,500, £5,000 or £10,000 for each claim. There’s a single item limit of £2,500. To choose the right amount:
- Add up what it would cost to replace the things you carry often (like your phone, laptop, headphones and watch).
- Think about peak times, such as holidays or commuting.
- Check the single-item limit. If an item costs more than £2,500 (or £1,000 for a bicycle), you may need to list it under contents or consider other insurance options.
Are your possessions covered away from home?
Yes, personal belongings insurance is specifically there to protect items when you take them with you away from home. Whether you’re off to work, going for coffee with your friends or jetting off on holiday, our cover protects your possessions wherever you are in the world.
What if my possessions are with someone else?
Coverage depends on your policy. Some insurers will cover you if someone in your household has your belongings. If your items are with a friend or family member who doesn’t live with you, out for repair or in another place (for example, during a move), check your policy to see if they’re covered.
Are your possessions covered anywhere abroad?
Heading off on holiday? Don’t forget your travel insurance. But rest assured that our personal possessions insurance covers most of your valuables anywhere in the world.
The only exception is for bicycles – these are covered in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and up to 60 days in Europe. So if you’re heading abroad with your bike, make sure you check your policy and get extra cover as part of your travel insurance if need be.
Can you be over-insured?
Yes you can. If you're over-insured, you might be paying too much for your policy. Or you might be doubling up on personal item insurance if you already have cover for certain valuables through other insurance policies.
You can also be under-insured. If that’s the case, when you make a claim, you may not get enough money back to cover the cost of the loss, damage or theft.
That’s why it’s important to correctly estimate the value of your personal possessions, or choose the right 'up to' limit when you buy home insurance.
Do you need personal possessions cover?
You don’t have to take out personal possessions cover – it’s not required by law. But it gives extra protection beyond standard contents insurance. Here’s why you might want it:
- Protect items away from home. Whether you’re commuting, staying with friends, or on holiday, your valuables are covered.
- Avoid significant repair or replacement costs. If you carry expensive tech or jewellery, this cover helps with the cost of repairing or replacing them.
- If you travel often. Many policies also cover your belongings when you’re abroad.
How to make a claim on your personal possessions cover
