Experience the serene beauty of Germany’s rivers. Passing through the Lorelei Passage in the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a highlight, with terraced vineyards, picturesque towns with half-timbered houses, and countless castles dotting the hillsides.
You have the chance to visit fairytale castles and explore the enchanting Black Forest, renowned for its spas and cuckoo clocks and often associated with the Brothers Grimm tales.
Day 1: UK - Düsseldorf – Cologne
Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home, for your flight to Düsseldorf. Upon arrival, transfer to Cologne to embark MS Serenade 1 (4T), where light refreshments are available.
Day 2: Königswinter - Andernach - Cochem
This morning, we head to Schloss Drachenburg, a castle-like villa set on a hill overlooking the Rhine. Built back in the late 1800s for a baron who never actually moved in, the villa has been faithfully restored and renovated with tapestries, murals and rich wood panelling. Once we’ve admired its spires, battlements and landscaped gardens, we rejoin MS Serenade 1 in Andernach and sail towards the charming medieval town of Cochem on the Moselle River, arriving late tonight.
Day 3: Cochem
This morning there is an optional tour to the Imperial Cochem Castle, with beautiful medieval towers and fairytale turrets soaring high over beautiful scenes of the charming town and sloping vine-clad banks of the river. The manually harvested crops make the most prestigious of German wines, and a tasting session is part of the excursion.
Day 4: Trier
This morning, join an included visit to Marienlay Castle set amongst sweeping hillsides that were planted with vines in the late 19th century. We’ll enjoy a guided tour of the wine cellar and a wine tasting. After returning to the ship, we’ll set sail this afternoon.
Day 5: Scenic cruising
Enjoy a relaxing day on board as we cruise through the glorious countryside of the Rhineland-Palatinate region, navigating seven locks as we sail. Pass by quaint, historic towns set amongst a backdrop of rolling hills and woodlands; and look out for medieval castles along both banks of the river.
Day 6: Koblenz - Lorelei Passage - Rüdesheim
The 19th century Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is the last incarnation of the fortifications that have watched over Koblenz from a clifftop perch through the last millennia. There’s an optional excursion to the fortress this morning; alternatively, spend a few hours strolling around this 2,000-year-old town with its beautiful baroque architecture and café-lined squares.
Just after lunch, we begin an afternoon of cruising along one of the river’s most scenic stretches, the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley. We pass vineyards, castles and storybook towns, and cruise through the Lorelei Passage, one of the narrowest sections of the river. Early this evening we arrive in Rüdesheim, where we dock overnight.
Day 7: Rüdesheim
Join an included tour to visit the gorgeous Rheinstein Castle, situated on a rocky ridge with stunning views of the Rhine. Originally built in AD 900, the castle served as a customs post for the German Empire, and was home to the Holy Roman Emperor, Rudolph von Habsburg in the 13th century. We sail this afternoon.
Day 8: Speyer
Join us for an optional walking tour of Speyer this morning, or explore at your own pace. The city’s red-brick Romanesque cathedral is its crowning glory, dating back around 1,000 years. Other sights to tick off include the ruins of a 12th century Jewish synagogue and the Old Mint, with its beautiful baroque façade. In the afternoon, we take a walking tour of Baden Baden, a fascinating town nestled in a beautiful landscape along the border of the Black Forest.
Day 9: Strasbourg
We take an included excursion into the heart of the Black Forest to visit the quaint town of Triberg. This is home to Germany’s highest waterfall; foaming and roaring, the water plunges 163 metres down and was used in 1884 to power the country’s first electric street lamps. Triberg is also where the first cuckoo clocks and the original Black Forest gateau recipe were made. We return to our ship in the afternoon to spend the rest of the day at leisure in Strasbourg.
Day 10: Breisach
This morning, we arrive in the town of Breisach, on the edge of the Black Forest. Discover the town’s pastel-shaded buildings and hilltop cathedral, or join our optional excursion into the Black Forest to wind your way through wooded valleys to the shores of Lake Titisee for a cruise, before stopping in the city of Freiburg, home to one of Germany’s oldest universities and a Gothic sandstone cathedral.
Day 11: Basel – UK
We transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. Upon arrival, your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.
