Travel Insurance - Coronavirus

(Last updated 28/02/2020)

How do I find out if the place I am travelling to is at risk?

Please check the latest government advice.

You can check if the country you are planning to visit is affected by coronavirus, as well as other relevant travel advice, at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) website.

Will I be covered if I choose to travel somewhere that has reported cases of coronavirus?

It has always been the case that if you travel to a country the FCO has advised against visiting, you would not be covered. Your cover is only not valid if the FCO advises against travel to the country or area you are visiting, rather than the incidence of coronavirus there. For example, the UK has reported cases of coronavirus, but travel to the UK has not been restricted.

However, if there was no FCO advice to avoid travel to that country or region issued before your trip was booked and your policy was purchased (whichever was later), then you will be covered according to the terms of your policy.

Check which countries and areas are listed by the FCO as not safe to visit due to the coronavirus.

If I ignore any government advice, will my travel insurance still cover me?

If you travel to a country the FCO has advised against visiting, you would not be covered. To check the status of the country you are planning to visit, please check the travel advice.

If I cancel my travel plans, can I claim any cancellation costs on my travel insurance?

If the FCO has not advised against travel to the country or area you are planning to visit and you simply no longer wish to go, you will not be able to claim cancellation costs. If the FCO has advised against travel to the country or area you are planning to visit, you would be able to claim. Check which countries and areas are listed by the FCO or the overall status of a specific country.

You should ensure that you follow FCO advice and also contact your tour operator in the first instance, and your travel insurance provider should be notified. Saga Travel Insurance
will review all claims on an individual basis. If you are a Saga Travel Insurance customer and need to claim, please contact us on 0800 092 2099 or call (+44) 1444 442106 from abroad. If you have a Saga Select policy, please contact us on 0800 092 2344 or call (+44) 1444 442141 from abroad.
