Frequently asked questions
Is it possible to buy a new travel insurance policy?
Yes, you can buy a new single-trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance policy from Saga. It will cover emergency medical costs if you become ill with coronavirus while you’re away and cancellation if you test positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of your trip's departure date, but it will not cover any other travel disruption in relation to the pandemic.
What travel insurance covers coronavirus?
A number of travel insurance providers have stopped selling new policies altogether and many others have put restrictions in place regarding claims relating to coronavirus.
Both Saga's single trip and annual multi-trip policies include emergency medical cover and repatriation if you fall ill with coronavirus while on your trip, cancellation if you receive a positive test result for COVID-19 within 14 days of your trip's departure date and abandonment if you test positive while you're away and need to cut your trip short.
You'll be able to claim up to the limit shown in your policy schedule.
What happens if I travel against FCDO advice?
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is currently advising against all but essential international travel for British nationals, although travel to some countries and territories is exempted. This advice can change with little or no notice. Even if you can get there, and your destination lets you in, if you travel against government advice, your travel insurance policy will be invalidated. Visit the Government website to see the most up-to-date travel advice.
What if I contract coronavirus while overseas?
Saga Travel Insurance policyholders should call our emergency medical helpline as soon as possible. The phone line is open 24/7 and an English-speaking advisor will be able to help you find the most appropriate place to seek medical attention.
Within the EU, your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will entitle you to treatment on the same terms as a local. Elsewhere, your travel insurance will cover the cost of emergency medical treatment.
Will I be covered if my trip is within the UK?
If you contract COVID-19 whilst on a trip in the UK, for which you have taken out a Saga Travel Insurance policy, the policy will provide cover for cancellation and abandonment as well as emergency medical and associated costs not covered by the National Health Service. Please see the Policy Books for full details.
Saga cover scenarios for COVID-19 cancellation and curtailment
For all new policies purchased on or after 12th August 2020, we have added in cover if your trip is disrupted due to coronavirus (COVID-19).
For existing Annual trip customers, this also applies if you have a trip due to start on or after 1st August 2020.
To help you understand this cover, we have set out common scenarios that may disrupt your trip with an explanation of what is or is not covered.
It is important that the scenarios set out below are read alongside the full terms and conditions contained in your policy book. Travel insurance policies are there to cover your holiday costs that you cannot get back from any other source. Therefore, we may ask you to contact your travel and accommodation provider(s) or credit card issuer, to discuss if a refund is available.
