Chicken Kiev has been popular for more than a century, but which supermarket Kyiv is best?

Winner: Waitrose 2 British Chicken Breast Fillet Kyivs

2 x 320g, (RRP: £4.50)

The succulent chicken, deliciously crunchy breadcrumbs and substantial garlic butter delivered a satisfying mild flavour. Yummy – and at a tasty price, too.

Tesco Garlic and Herb Chicken Kievs

2 x 375g, (RRP: £4.50)

With the Kyivs different sizes and the butter unevenly distributed, these looked disappointing. The chicken was a little chewy and there was a lack of garlic flavour.

But they tasted good and they were deliciously crispy.

M&S Gastropub Chicken Kyiv

1 x 225g, (RRP: £6)

This top-end offering has a top-end price – but it is exquisite. The succulent chicken breast has a supreme-like bone in a crispy sourdough crust.

The garlic flavour could have been stronger, but this was still delectable.

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Wild Garlic Chicken Kyivs

2 x 385g, (RRP: £5.50)

The breasts were stuffed with wild garlic, yet the flavour was not strong and there wasn’t enough butter.

But the chicken was moist and the sourdough crumb crispy and golden.

  • Rating: 8/10

Aldi Specially Selected 2 Sourdough Breaded Wild Garlic & Jersey Butter Chicken Kievs

2 x 375g, (RRP: £3.99)

These Kyivs’ great sourdough crust was let down by the firm, dry chicken. The garlic butter lacked taste and was oozing in one Kyiv but not in the other.

However, these are great value and perfectly palatable.

Morrisons Garlic Chicken Kyivs

2 x 260g, (RRP: £2.85)

These cheaper Kyivs have reformed chicken pieces rather than an entire breast fillet, which gives them a different texture. But, if you’re after a garlic hit, the butter delivered the strongest taste of all the Kyivs we tried.

  • Rating: 6/10

Chicken Kiev or Kyiv?

The dish was traditionally called Chicken Kiev, but in 2022 many supermarkets changed the name to Kyiv in support of Ukraine, following Russia's invasion of the country.

We know the the Ukrainian capital city as Kyiv, a spelling derived from the Ukrainian language name Київ, while Kiev is from the Russian name Киев.
