Out of the blue I received a £60 refund from Tesco Bank, with an explanation that it was for PPI mis-selling. A day or two later I received a plausible call from a firm in Leeds, asking for my details and the names of any banks I’d used – which I refused to give.
I’ve since received many calls of this nature and don’t know whom to trust.

Do not trust these calls – which are invariably from marketing companies or, worse, fraudsters. If they are genuine they will already know your details. They will also have your address and can write to you if necessary. Never give out any personal details over the phone, even those that are publicly available, as fraudsters can piece information together to complete your profile. You may also be unintentionally giving them consent to call you – and to sell your number to others. Don’t even talk to them; simply hang up.
Companies that cold call can no longer conceal their phone numbers, to make it easier to report them, but nuisance calls are unlikely to stop.
