New Year

Have a happy New Year!

Have a light, bright New Year’s Eve – dazzling firework displays and stunning light shows are a great alternative to the traditional house party. Here are five ideas to help the New Year glow with a bang…

Go Dutch for firework fun

A party atmosphere prevails at New Year in Amsterdam. Apart from firecrackers being let off after dark, the official fireworks display is held at Oosterdock, near Amsterdam Centraal train station. Enjoy a fabulous display, then mingle with the lively crowds that fill the main squares such as Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein.

City of Light

As well as the beautifully lit Eiffel Tower (there’s usually a light show at midnight), make a beeline for the Champs Élysées to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Paris, which is closed to traffic for the night. The trees are hung with thousands of twinkling lights and crowds of revellers enjoy the festivities here. Bonne année!

Dazzling displays Down Under

For a real change of scene, seek the warmth of Sydney and one of the world’s most incredible New Year celebrations. With a backdrop of Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, plus the harbour waters to reflect the fireworks, the location is wonderful. Some advice from those who have been? Pick your viewing spot and get there nice and early!

Destination Dublin

Official firework displays may be a little short on the ground here, but Dublin is well worth a visit for the atmosphere alone. This welcoming city knows how to enjoy itself and New Year’s Eve is no exception. As well as the Countdown Concert, the New Year Festival Dublin means there are music and art trails to follow across the compact capital – perfect for anyone who likes to mix their celebrations with a little culture.

Niagara New Year

As well as a fireworks display above Niagara Falls on New Year’s Eve, the falls themselves are brought alive with a stunning light show. Great viewpoints for the fireworks are Prospect Point on the US side, or Queen Victoria Park on the Canadian side, which has the added bonus of a free concert in the Park before the fireworks.
