Life’s all about choices: what we spend our time doing, who we spend it with, and what we spend our money on. And if we’re currently feeling the squeeze because of soaring fuel prices and cost of living increases, something may have to give.

Choosing where to economise can be tricky – there are certain things we’re not prepared to give up, others we probably wish we could, and some that we can’t legally do without. Motor insurance is a must for car owners, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t options that could lead to savings. Read on to find out more.

Car insurance premiums have been going through a period of adjustment since January 2022. New Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) rules mean that customers renewing their insurance must now be offered the same options as newbies.

This is good news in the long term, but for customers who are used to shopping around for the cheapest deal each year – or for those coming up for renewal while the insurance industry is still adapting to these new regulations – you may be looking for a new option to suit your needs and budget.

Saga Standard – the lowest price we can offer you

We’ve just taken the step of making our lowest cost Comprehensive cover level, Saga Standard, available for anyone to buy directly from us. It’s one of three policies you can choose from depending on your needs and budget, and it’s got plenty to offer to new and renewing customers. Here are some of the essentials we include.

Highlights of Saga Standard:

Guaranteed replacement car

If your car is being repaired at one of our approved garages after a UK accident, we’ll arrange for you to have a courtesy car to get around in.

Audio/visual cover

We’ll pay up to £1,000 to either repair, replace or pay you cash for the damage to permanently fitted equipment.

European cover

You’re insured to drive for up to 90 days in a policy year in 35+ countries and territories overseas.

New-for-old child car seat cover

We don’t want you worrying whether a child car seat is still safe to use after an accident, so we’ll pay to have it replaced with a brand new one even if there's no apparent damage, just in case.

Uninsured driver promise

Not only are you covered if you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured driver that’s not your fault. Just give us their car reg and we’ll refund any excess you’ve paid and it won’t affect your No Claim Discount.

Personal accident cover

Up to £5,000 for certain injuries you sustain in an accident involving your vehicle.

New for old cover

If you’ve owned your vehicle from new and it’s up to a year old, we’ll replace it with a brand-new one if it’s written off.

Plus:

Personal belongings cover up to £400; medical expenses cover up to £250 per person; and voluntary work covered as standard.

If you already have a policy with us, you can find out more about it at renewal and look at the other options available to you. If you don’t yet have cover with Saga, see how our cover levels compare or get a quote now.

Did you know?
We now offer three Comprehensive car insurance cover levels: Standard, Select and Plus. If you’re renewing with Saga, you can choose whether to keep your existing cover, or shift up or down a level… to suit your current needs and budget.

Other ways you can reduce the cost of car insurance

Each year, your renewal price is based on the cover details you gave your insurer the year before. If your driving habits have changed during that time, make sure you update your details before you pay for another year’s insurance.

The following changes can all affect the price:

  • Annual mileage - Reducing your mileage could reduce the cost of your insurance.
  • Class of use - Tell your insurer if you’ve stopped using your car for commuting and/or business.
  • Change of address - Moving could affect your price but, at Saga, you won’t be charged an admin fee for telling us about it.

And if you’re looking to further reduce the cost, you could consider the following:

  • Increase your voluntary excess
  • Make a one-off payment rather than pay in instalments
  • Buy a lower-powered vehicle
  • Keep building up your No Claim Discount (NCD)
  • Remove or reduce your additional options (add-ons).

Coming up to renewal?

If you’re insured with Saga, you’ll be sent a renewal invite at least 21 days before your renewal date. You can then chat to us about your options by calling 0800 056 9169.

Lines are open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 8pm, Saturday 8.30am to 5pm, Sunday 9am to 5pm and bank holidays 8.30am to 5pm.
