Christmas presents for boys aged 8 to 11
From the brilliant father-and-son gift of Transformers Grimlock Then and Now, to magnetic experiments, sports scooters and more.
Lego can be a minefield with more and more ranges available, many of them tied in with film franchises. For older children, the Lego Technic range offers a great mix of fun, collectable toys for boys aged eight and upwards. Prices vary wildly depending on the size of the set, but the hovercraft (42002) and helicopter (42020) are both available for around £13.
Find the helicopter and the hovercraft at Amazon.
4M Kidz Lab Magnet Science
This kit allows children to perform fun magnetic experiments and games, great for keeping older children entertained and helping them learn about science. £10.99. Available from Amazon.
Scooters can vary in price, but some of the cheaper models can be a little flimsy and not suitable for older grandchildren. The mid-priced Sporter three-wheeled scooter is sturdy and has the bonus of being foldable. It’s also a little different to the usual scooters – rather than pushing off with their feet, three-wheeled scooter riders move by shifting their body weight. The blue model is available from Smyths Toys at £49.99.
John Adams SuperGraph
Grandchildren who love to copy their favourite cartoon characters will enjoy the John Adams SuperGraph, a clever drawing aid that uses mirrors to let children ‘trace’ their chosen picture without using any batteries.
Available for around £20 from Amazon.
Transformers Grimlock Then and Now
Grimlock Then and Now is a particular hit if your own adult child was a fan of Transformers in the 80s. This set recreates the classic 80s Grimlock and pairs it with his modern counterpart, as seen in the recent film, making it an excellent multi-generational gift for a father and son. Available from Toys R Us.
